Scam safety in Namibia

Most scams in Namibia follow the same few patterns. Knowing them protects you more than any lookup.

Renting a flat or room

  • Never pay a "viewing fee". Legitimate landlords and agents do not charge to show a place.
  • View the property in person, in daylight, before any money moves.
  • Be careful with listings priced far below the going rate for Windhoek, Swakopmund or Oshakati.
  • Ask for the title deed holder or agency name and check it independently.
  • Pay deposits only into an account in the same name as the person or agency you met.

Mobile money and banking

  • No bank or mobile-money service will ever ask for your PIN or OTP; not by call, SMS or WhatsApp.
  • "Wrong transfer, please send it back" messages are almost always a scam.
  • Screenshots of payment confirmations are easy to fake. Wait for the money in your own account.

Jobs, marketplaces and investments

  • Real employers do not charge for interviews, uniforms, training or "registration".
  • Meet marketplace sellers in a public place and inspect goods before paying.
  • Guaranteed returns are not a thing. Anyone promising them is selling you a loss.

If you have been scammed

  • Contact your bank or mobile-money provider immediately - speed matters.
  • Open a case at your nearest Namibian Police (NamPol) station and keep the case number.
  • Keep every message, receipt and account number as evidence.
  • Report the number here so other people are warned: report a number.
